The Psychedelic Furs – New York 1982 (12-Inch Double-LP)

This double album showcases the Psychedelic Furs’ blistering gig at the legendary My Father’s Place club, in Roslyn, New York, on 24 October 1982. Capturing the band as they broke through in the United States, this remarkable show was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show.

The Psychedelic Furs’ sound is anchored by their signature blend of post-punk grit, soaring saxophones, and Richard Butler’s raspy, melancholic vocals. Their most defining tracks perfectly capture the atmospheric, brooding essence of the 1980s new wave era.

One listen to this set and it will be clear where the band got its inspiration; David Bowie, Roxy Music and the Sex Pistols. Musically, they sit closest to classic-era Roxy, especially with the sax fills of Duncan Kilbourn, who often mirror’s Roxy sax-man Andy MacKay’s style. But it is lead vocalist Richard Butler who guides the band’s direction with his distinct vocals, combining a Berlin-era Bowie with the cynical breath of John Lydon.
