On 25 February 1969, the Doors were recording at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Recorders studio. That evening, the band and their companions enjoyed a meal at the nearby Blue Boar, indulging in beer and tequila for a couple of hours, before returning to the studio to commence an impromptu jamming session.

Featured on this release is the notorious hour-long studio jam, famously referred to as the ‘Rock Is Dead’ session. Its notoriety has only grown with time, giving rise to a rich mythology often revolving around a deliberate survey of the entire spectrum of rock ’n’ roll history, the Doors’ self-awareness of their role within it, and purportedly Jim Morrison’s assertion of the demise of rock. According to biographer Stephen Davis, ‘the band delved into free-form R&B, improvising around the theme of rock and roll’s demise’.

In describing the track Rock Is Dead, frontman Jim Morrison characterised it as a compilation of ‘throwbacks to old songs in the studio. Blues escapades. Rock classics encompassing the entirety of rock music’s history – blues, rock and roll, Latin jazz, surf music’. This unmissable release presents a rare delight for the many fans of the Doors, capturing the essence of a pivotal time in the band’s history.
