This album features the highlights of the Grateful Dead’s live performance at Château d’Hérouville, in Hérouville, France, on 21 June 1971.
On a whim, the Grateful Dead flew to France in 1971 to play at a cancelled festival. The band were housed at Château d’Hérouville, a residential recording studio, made famous by Elton John, who recorded three albums there, (Honky Château, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player and Goodbye Yellowbrick Road).
A host of other music icons recorded at Château d’Hérouville, including Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Bad Company, Iggy Pop and Fleetwood Mac. Though the Grateful Dead did not record there, they did end up playing an impromptu show in the in the backyard, the highlights of which are documented here.
Featured here, are stellar renditions of Grateful Dead classics such as Sugar Magnolia, China Cat Sunflower and Black Peter, alongside a number of covers that dot the performance.
